NEW BLOG: Do Collagen Supplements Work?

Hello, Glow Girls and Boys!

Lately, when I’ve been wandering in my local drugstore/grocery store, I have been noticing more and more collagen supplement-type products popping up. Sometimes they are in the vitamin aisle and sometimes I see them in the beauty/skincare aisles. Initially, I ignored the powders, gel caps and gummies thinking casually to myself, “…..some sort of scam….”

BUT THEN………I was on the phone with a long time Cellular Skin RX Glow Girl and she mentioned that she had been taking collagen supplements and thought that they had actually made a difference in her skin. Since Glow Girls and Boys are generally no-nonsense, facts-based consumers, I was intrigued.

I immediately did a PubMed search to find out if there was any clinical published research on collagen having a significant effect on the skin. And lo and behold, indeed there WAS.

YES, VIRGINIA, COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS DO HAVE A BENEFICIAL EFFECT ON WRINKLES.

Frankly, I was surprised. But facts are facts, Glow people! Don’t believe me? Here are links to the latest research indicating that YES, you should add a collagen supplement to your anti-aging toolkit. (The results were not insignificant. One study showed a 20% decrease in eye wrinkles specifically.)

Liane Bolke,1 Gerrit Schlippe,1 Joachim Gerß,2 and Werner Voss1,*

“….Objective dermatological measurements, such as cutometry and corneometry, have proven that oral collagen peptides together with other dermonutrients significantly improve skin hydration, elasticity, roughness, and density after three months of intake. These tests thus verify the results obtained in previous trials. Moreover, and in line with the objective measurements, the study participants, in their subjective assessments, concluded that their skin appearance had significantly improved. “

Here’s another one:

. 2018 Jul; 10(7): 826 Published online 2018 Jun 26. doi: 10.3390/nu10070826

Oral Intake of Low-Molecular-Weight Collagen Peptide Improves Hydration, Elasticity, and Wrinkling in Human Skin: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Do-Un Kim,1, Hee-Chul Chung,1, Jia Choi,2, Yasuo Sakai,3, and Boo-Yong Lee2,*

“….Our results demonstrated that oral intake of LMWCP (1000 mg once daily for 12 weeks) efficiently improved the health of photoaged skin in a cohort of women aged 40–60 years, by significantly improving skin hydration as early as after 6 weeks of intake, and skin wrinkling and elasticity after 12 weeks of intake. ”

And here’s one more just in case you’re still skeptical (you know who you are 🙂 )

2014;27(3):113-9. doi: 10.1159/000355523. Epub 2013 Dec 24.

Oral intake of specific bioactive collagen peptides reduces skin wrinkles and increases dermal matrix synthesis.

“…the effectiveness of the specific bioactive collagen peptide (BCP) VERISOL® on eye wrinkle formation and stimulation of procollagen I, elastin and fibrillin biosynthesis in the skin was assessed….The ingestion of the specific BCP used in this study promoted a statistically significant reduction of eye wrinkle volume (p < 0.05) in comparison to the placebo group after 4 and 8 weeks (20%) of intake. Moreover a positive long-lasting effect was observed 4 weeks after the last BCP administration (p < 0.05). Additionally, after 8 weeks of intake a statistically significantly higher content of procollagen type I (65%) and elastin (18%) in the BCP-treated volunteers compared to the placebo-treated patients was detected. “

Believe me now? I knew you would!

I know your next question is which ones should I take when there are so many different choices out there. Well, I did the reading for you so here are the general things to look for when you’re reading the ingredient labels.

Best form: Marine Collagen Dipeptides or Tripeptides, Type I, II and III

Decent form: Hydrolyzed Collagen from Bovine or Chicken Source, Type I, II and III

How much to take: General consensus seemed to be anywhere from 2-15 grams per day. One study said going up to 36 grams was fine but most studies used 2-5 grams per day.

How long does it take to work: 4 weeks for initial results and more serious results after 8 week to 12 weeks.

Side effects: None mentioned

Added benefits: Joint pain was reduced. Flexibility of joints was increased. Overall mood was improved. Cellulite was improved. (These benefits were not reported in every article.)

Beneficial supplements included in the formulas: vitamin C, vitamin E, linoleic acid, hyaluronic acid, various fruit enzymes.

Reputable Brands: Resvereage, NeoCell, Evolution 18 (Bobbi Brown brand), Truvani

DON’T FORGET TO EAT WELL, TOO.

If you’re wondering what foods to eat to help with your anti-aging challenges, here’s a quick list. Pick these up at the store along with your favorite collagen supplement!

Salmon ( or any fatty fish filled with Omega-3-6-9)

Soy Isoflavones (soy sauce, tofu, edamame, also available as an oral supplement)

Orange and Red fruits and veggies for their high vitamin A and C content (oranges, red and orange bell peppers, sweet potatoes, papaya, pineapple, tomatoes, mangoes, pomegranate, carrots, etc.) And don’t forget the avocados.

Blueberries (super high in anthocyanins that have various anti-aging benefits)

Greens – ( especially watercress – what a powerhouse!, broccoli, spinach)

And finally drink your green tea during the day and a glass of red wine at night.

DONE!

Glow People aren’t the types who “go gently into that good night.” Do we age gracefully? Yes. Do we give up? Never. Cellular Skin RX has the external anti-aging battle covered for you. Get some of these supplements and eat well and YOU have it covered from the inside out.

Hi, Linda! No, we do not. Would you be interested in seeing us add that to our product line? I think we will put out a questionnaire and find out how much interest there is. Meanwhile, the brands recommended in the blog are readily available in a slew of stores.
